Mathura-based activist Deepak Sharma created a stir in the temple town by dressing as a cockroach to protest against pollution in the Yamuna river. Sharma first appeared at the municipal corporation office singing and dancing in costume before staging another protest inside a drain near Bihar Ghat in Vrindavan.

Accusing officials of ignoring untreated sewage flowing into the Yamuna, Sharma said the river was being “poisoned” and vowed to continue his protest until action was taken. He also claimed he received threatening calls from municipal authorities.

Municipal Commissioner Jag Pravesh said Sharma had been invited for discussions but did not attend.

The unusual protest follows the recent emergence of the satirical “Cockroach Janata Party” on social media. Sharma said he adopted the costume to draw public attention to the worsening pollution and alleged official negligence in Mathura and Vrindavan. The initiave has been witnesed by many passeby and support for him has been growing. The authorities have been caught off-guard and people in and around the town are in support of him.
