Senior BJP leaders on Thursday accused the ruling Congress and the BRS of presiding over corruption-ridden administrations in Telangana, alleging financial irregularities, political collusion and governance failure, and urged voters to strengthen the BJP in the forthcoming municipal elections.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy said corruption had come to define governance in the state and claimed there had been no meaningful development either during the decade-long BRS rule or in the 26 months of the present Congress government. He alleged large-scale misuse of public funds and said both parties had failed to address basic public needs while focusing instead on exploiting state resources.
He was speaking at the ‘Save Telangana’ presentation programme held at Kashish Hall in Musheerabad,
presided over by BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao. The event featured a PowerPoint presentation and a special song highlighting alleged corruption under the Congress government.
Kishan Reddy made serious allegations regarding the phone-tapping case, claiming a secret understanding was reached at the national level between former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, which he said resulted in inaction against BRS leaders. He alleged that even High Court judges, film personalities, media owners and journalists were subjected to surveillance, as stated earlier by the Congress government itself, yet no decisive action followed.
He further claimed that despite public remarks by KCR’s daughter about corruption in the previous regime, the Congress government failed to pursue accountability. According to him, the Congress created political hype around the phone-tapping issue for two years but ultimately limited action to the demotion of a DSP-level officer. He argued that there was little difference between the Congress and BRS, alleging that several BRS candidates elected in municipal polls eventually joined the Congress.
Calling upon citizens to see through what he described as political collusion, Kishan Reddy urged them to support the BJP in municipal elections. He accused the government of denying employee benefits, neglecting civic infrastructure and failing to repair a majority of non-functional streetlights in urban areas. He also alleged that staff shortages and financial mismanagement had left municipalities struggling and residents facing daily hardships.
BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao said Telangana, once regarded as a financially strong state, had been pushed into a debt trap. He alleged that while the BRS government accumulated heavy debt during its tenure, the Congress government added nearly ₹80,000 crore more within two years, increasing the burden on citizens.
Ramchander Rao also claimed that corruption under the previous regime was evident from statements made by KCR’s daughter and alleged that ministers in the present Congress government were accusing one another of malpractice. He said municipalities were in severe financial distress, estimating that 127 civic bodies together carried debts of around Rs. 3,600 crore.
Questioning how leaders from the two parties could seek votes after alleged neglect of civic development, he appealed to voters to back the BJP to “liberate” Telangana. He maintained that the BJP did not oppose the Musi river rejuvenation project but criticised the Congress for demolishing houses of the poor in the name of HYDRAA and spreading misinformation about the party. The programme was attended by several BJP leaders and public representatives from Telangana and neighbouring states.
