Hyderabad’s electricity consumption saw an unexpected dip in 2025, according to Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL). The city recorded a total consumption of 4190 megawatts this year, a decline from the 4352 megawatts used in 2024. This comes as a surprise following consistent year-on-year growth — from 3435 megawatts in 2022 to 3756 megawatts in 2023, with a notable 15 percent jump between 2023 and 2024.
TGSPDCL officials cited unpredictable weather conditions as a key reason behind the drop. They pointed to untimely rains and a delayed rise in summer temperatures as contributing factors. Although a 15 percent increase in consumption had been projected for 2025 — particularly once Hyderabad’s temperatures crossed 40°C — peak usage was already recorded before hitting that mark. With milder weather prevailing, demand for cooling appliances dropped significantly, affecting both domestic and commercial electricity use.
As of 2025, Hyderabad has around 65 lakh electricity connections under TGSPDCL, including 54 lakh domestic households, an increase from 62 lakh households in 2024. Within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, several areas saw rapid growth in electricity consumption and new connections.
Mokila and Kokapet in Ibrahimbagh Circle, Patancheru, Kandukur in Rajendranagar, and Medchal in Medchal Circle, reported a 25–30 percent increase in demand. These areas are emerging as future consumption hotspots. Other localities, including Kondapur, Kukatpally, Jeedimetla, Habsiguda, Keesara, and Sainikpuri, showed a more moderate 10–15 percent rise.
The increase in these zones is being driven by ongoing urban expansion, with new high-rise residential complexes, commercial buildings, gated communities, and data centers coming up — all of which require continuous and high-capacity electricity supply. While the overall demand dipped, these localised spikes indicate how urban development continues to reshape Hyderabad’s power needs.
To keep pace with the city’s growth, TGSPDCL has expanded its infrastructure over the past year. In GHMC limits alone, 19 new substations have been added, along with 602 new 11 kV feeders, 70 new 33 kV feeders, and nearly 3,000 new distribution transformers. These upgrades aim to ensure uninterrupted supply and support rising load requirements in high-growth zones.
