The City of Vijayawada faced several tense moments on Saturday following two phone call threats of bombs being planted at key locations. Firstly, an unidentified person called the control room and informed that a bomb was planted in the busy Besant Road. Police and bomb squad immediately swung into action and carried out intensive checks. All the shops as well as carts were inspected. The shops were closed and barricades were erected to prevent people and traders from entering the road.
Apart from this, a total of four police teams carried out a thorough inspection from Bandar Road to Eluru Road and allowed businesses to run as usual from afternoon. Just as the police were breathing relief, another bomb threat call was made stating that a bomb was planted at Vijayawada railway station. Teams of GRP, CSW and bomb squad, who were alerted, carried out extensive checks at the railway station. The police confirmed that they received the call from Latur in Maharashtra.
Police said the caller who claimed to have planted the bomb, later switched off the phone. Police have conducted thorough checking of passengers and platforms at the station in the wake of the bomb threat call and later concluded that it was a hoax call.
