A design patent has been officially granted to Dr. Rambabu Muppidi and his research team for their innovative Calabash Bottle, an eco-friendly product inspired by traditional Indian craftsmanship. The Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trademarks announced the approval, marking a major recognition for sustainable design innovation.

The Calabash Bottle is a lifestyle product crafted from dried gourds (Lagenaria siceraria). The team conducted field studies at Shilparamam and Rayadurgam, Banjara Hills exhibitions, where they observed traditional Calabash Bottle Craft. Using these insights, they developed a modern production process — drying and shaping the natural gourds under controlled heat, then applying eco-safe polish to create a durable, lightweight, and reusable bottle. The design blends heritage techniques with ergonomic and aesthetic features suited for contemporary use.

The patent was filed under Application No. 465502-001 and CBR No. 214857, and was officially granted on November 7, 2025, after its filing on July 12, 2025.

Acknowledging the support of Subhajith Saha and Shelendra Kumar from Resolute 4IP for legal guidance, the team also credited Dr. Ravindrababu, Associate Professor at GITAM University, and Anirudh, B.Des Product Design (LLPD), FDDI Hyderabad, for their valuable contributions.
