Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre, Vidyanagar, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing the first-ever Microvascular Surgery in 40 years of Durgabai Deshmukh hospital history.
This complex procedure was conducted on a 58-year old man, Gummala Sayanna, from Gutpa village in Nizamabad district, who suffered from Maxillary Sinus Carcinoma, a rare form of cancer affecting only one in a few individuals.
Sayanna had been experiencing facial swelling, a large lump (10 cm) on right jaw, watery eyes, and difficulty swallowing for the past one year.
After consultations with various corporate hospitals in Nizamabad and Hyderabad, his family was faced with the daunting prospect of expensive treatment due to the advanced stage of his disease.
Seeking a solution, they approached Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre, Vidyanagar, where Dr U Azad Chandrashekhar, Medical Director & Senior Surgical Oncologist, took on the challenge.
Dr Azad Chandrasekhar and his medical team meticulously planned, with a Tru-cut biopsy, CT head and neck scan, and whole body PET-CT scan and executed the intricate Microvascular Surgery, which involved repairing or reconstructing small blood vessels using specialized instruments and a microscope.
This procedure, lasting 10 to 12 hours, included Radical Maxillectomy and Free Anterolateral Thigh (ALT) flap and Free flap reconstruction.
Remarkably, Sayanna recovered fully within a week, thanks to the expertise of the medical team and the comprehensive post-operative care provided at the center.
“We are incredibly proud to have successfully performed this complex Microvascular Surgery, offering renewed hope for patients with rare and challenging cancers,” said Dr Azad Chandrasekhar. “Our dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff worked tirelessly to ensure the best possible outcome for Sayanna, and we are delighted with his swift recovery.”
This organization's dedication to delivering cutting-edge medical care using state-of-the-art technology and international standard treatment facilities. “This achievement exemplifies our mission to make advanced healthcare accessible to everyone,” he stated.
