Senior urologist Dr Rahul Devraj has been appointed as the new Director of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for a period of three years. The appointment was announced through a notification issued by Principal Secretary, Health, Christina Chongthu.
Dr Rahul Devraj succeeds Bheerappa Nagari, a senior surgical gastroenterologist who was appointed Director of NIMS in June 2023 and recently completed his three-year tenure.
Currently serving as the Head of the Urology Department at NIMS, Dr Rahul Devraj has played a key role in strengthening the institute’s renal transplant programme. Under his leadership, the urology team has successfully performed more than 2,000 kidney transplants, establishing NIMS as one of the leading renal transplant centres in the government healthcare sector in India.
A major milestone was achieved last year when the institute conducted the first robotic renal transplant in a government hospital in South India. The achievement marked a significant advancement in public healthcare and transplant surgery in the region.
Over the past three years, surgeons at NIMS have carried out around 500 kidney transplants, reflecting the steady growth of the institute’s transplant programme and its expanding role in providing advanced medical care.
