GHMC is planning to introduce fines for pet owners who fail to register their pets

Metro India News | Hyderabad

Despite an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 pet dogs and cats in Hyderabad, only around 14,000 have been licensed with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), according to officials from its veterinary wing. This means that only about 17.5% to 20% of pets in the city are officially registered.

The civic body is urging pet owners to register their animals, emphasizing that the process is simple, hassle-free, and completely free of charge—unlike states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi, where pet registration involves fees and stricter enforcement.

An official from the GHMC veterinary section explained that the licensing procedure requires minimal information and is designed for quick registration. Each registered pet receives a unique ID, creating a valuable database linked with the pet owner’s contact details and email. This system enables GHMC to send timely health advisories, including reminders for the annual Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV), which is crucial for rabies control in the city.
