Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan jointly laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Akhanda Godavari Tourism Project at Pushkar Ghat in Rajahmundry. With a budget of Rs.94.44 crore, the project is set to transform the historic city into a premier tourism and spiritual destination ahead of the upcoming Pushkaralu.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister Shekhawat said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, tourism development in India has gained unprecedented momentum. “Andhra Pradesh is witnessing rapid development through the double-engine government model. We are laying the foundation for several transformative projects across the state, and Akhanda Godavari is a proud addition,” he said.

Shekhawat stressed the importance of improving infrastructure — from accommodation and transport to food and safety — to make India a top destination for global travellers. He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to extending all support to projects that enhance local livelihoods and cultural heritage.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan expressed pride in Rajahmundry’s cultural significance. “The Godavari River is the soul of this city. This land has given birth to legends like Dokkha Seethamma and poet Nannayya. We are realizing a long-cherished dream with this project,” he said.

Pawan Kalyan said, “Once completed, the project is expected to attract over 4 lakh additional visitors annually. Strong leadership and governance can drive rapid development. Leaders like Shekhawat understand the spirit of this land and have stood by Andhra Pradesh, even halting Visakhapatnam Steel Plant’s privatization,” he said.

Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari said she would work to ensure the city gains recognition as a heritage district. “The Centre has shown keen interest in Andhra Pradesh’s tourism growth. Rajahmundry has immense potential, and I will do my part to ensure it is fully realized,” she said. Ministers Kandula Durgesh and Nimmala Ramanaidu also attended the foundation ceremony, along with several dignitaries.
