Gauthu Lachanna’s legacy becomes political ground for TDP

The legacy of veteran backward-class leader and freedom fighter Gauthu Lachanna became the centrepiece of the ruling TDP-led alliance’s political messaging on Sunday, with ministers asserting that the government was seeking to translate his ideals into policies aimed at the social, economic and political advancement of BC communities. The State-level celebrations marking Lachanna’s 117th birth anniversary were held at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada. Ministers Savitha, Anagani Satyaprasad, Kollu Ravindra, Kolusu Parthasarathy and Atchannaidu paid floral tributes to Lachanna and highlighted his contribution to the freedom struggle and the rights of BCs, farmers and workers.

Minister Savitha said Lachanna’s lifelong struggle for disadvantaged communities remained an inspiration for the present generation. She said the alliance government had decided to observe his birth anniversary as a State festival to ensure that his contribution was remembered by future generations.

Minister Anagani Satyaprasad recalled Lachanna’s participation in the freedom movement and his long campaigns for farmers and backward communities. He said education remained the most powerful instrument for social mobility and that the government was therefore placing particular emphasis on educational opportunities for BC students. Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy called for greater unity among BC communities, warning against attempts to create divisions within them. He said welfare alone was insufficient and that BC families needed opportunities for sustainable economic advancement.
