Smoking on Alipiri footway triggers action by TTD

A man allegedly smoking while walking along the Alipiri footpath leading to Tirumala has sparked outrage, prompting the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to initiate action.The TTD has decided to lodge a police complaint against the individual for violating regulations and taking part in an activity prohibited in the sacred Tirumala area. Officials also announced disciplinary action against security personnel found negligent in detecting the violation during routine checks.

Smoking, alcohol consumption, non-vegetarian food and intoxicants are prohibited across Tirumala and TTD-controlled areas, including the Alipiri and Srivari Mettu pedestrian routes. The temple administration said such restrictions are intended to preserve the sanctity of the pilgrimage routes and protect the sentiments of devotees. The incident has also raised questions over the effectiveness of security checks along the heavily used pedestrian paths, where thousands of devotees travel on foot to reach the hill shrine.
