GHMC striving to make Hyderabad free of mosquitoes

Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar said the GHMC Entomology department was undertaking extensive measures to prevent mosquito-borne diseases in Hyderabad. As part of the special monsoon drive scheduled from August 11 to 21, the Minister launched an IEC (Information, Education and Communication) programme on mosquito-control measures at the Minister’s Quarters in Hyderabad on Saturday.

During the programme, Entomology department officials briefed the Minister on various awareness initiatives being undertaken to educate citizens on mosquito prevention. Ponnam Prabhakar also inspected the equipment being used for mosquito-control operations and enquired about their functioning, usage and effectiveness. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the GHMC was conducting door-to-door awareness programmes to educate people on maintaining cleanliness in and around their homes to safeguard public health.

He appealed to citizens to take personal responsibility for keeping their homes and surroundings clean. He urged people to actively participate in the ‘Friday-Dry Day’ programme every Friday by removing stagnant water from their premises and surroundings to prevent mosquito breeding.

Ponnam Prabhakar said the government was taking preventive measures to check the spread of diseases such as dengue and urged people to cooperate with the authorities by ensuring that water did not stagnate in and around their homes. He said Hyderabad could remain healthy only with the active participation of citizens, stressing that keeping homes and surroundings clean was equally important alongside the preventive measures being taken by the government. The Minister appealed to people to follow GHMC guidelines and actively participate in efforts to prevent mosquito breeding and the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
