Nari Shakti rising

Metro India News | Hyderabad

For nearly three decades, India’s women waited. The Women’s Reservation Bill was first introduced in 1996 then again in 1998, 1999, and 2008. Each time, opposition parties buried it under political calculations. The 2008 version passed the Rajya Sabha in 2010 but was deliberately allowed to lapse in the Lok Sabha in 2014 never put to vote. For 27 years, women were used as vote banks. On 19th September 2023, standing in the new Parliament House, PM Modi introduced the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and got it passed with 454 votes in favor, only 2 against in Lok Sabha. Rajya Sabha passed it unanimously. session.

Opposition blocked it again in April 2026

Even after the bill received Presidential assent, the opposition found a new way to obstruct. In April 2026, when the government called a special session to operationalise the 33% reservation, the entire opposition voted it down. A two-thirds majority was needed. Women’s rights were sacrificed again for political gain.
