Taking serious note of rising complaints of harassment and forced money collection, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police V.C. Sajjanar on Friday issued a stern warning to transgender groups, stating that strict legal action would follow any act of extortion.
Addressing a special meeting attended by nearly 250 transgender persons at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), Ameerpet, the Commissioner urged the community to give up unlawful practices and make use of the opportunities created by the State government to live with dignity.
‘Forced collections unacceptable’
Sajjanar highlighted increasing public grievances about groups visiting households during auspicious occasions and demanding large sums.
We have been receiving multiple complaints. Harassment and forced collections are unacceptable. We will not tolerate such actions,” he said, adding that anyone taking the law into their own hands would face imprisonment.
He cautioned that criminal cases could damage their future and reiterated that troubling innocent citizens would lead to certain jail terms.
