A tenant allegedly strangled his 65-year-old landlady, Suredde Sujatha, to death for her gold jewellery and dumped her body in the Godavari River, police said. Sujatha, who lived alone in Baba Nagar, Mallapur, Hyderabad, had rented a portion of her home to M. Anji Babu just two months ago. During this time, police said, he allegedly noticed she possessed gold ornaments and cash, prompting him to plot her murder.

The crime occurred on December 19, 2025, when Anji Babu allegedly strangled Sujatha inside her house to prevent her from raising an alarm. Following her disappearance, her sister lodged a complaint with Nacharam police, who launched an investigation.

Anji Babu, along with his associates Durga Rao and Yuva Raj, was taken into custody. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed that the trio transported Sujatha’s body from Hyderabad to Konaseema and dumped it in the Godavari River to destroy evidence.

Police recovered four gold bangles, a gold chain, two gold ear-studs, mobile phones, and other incriminating items. Authorities confirmed there was no prior relationship between the victim and accused apart from the tenancy.

All three suspects remain in custody as police continue investigations, including forensic procedures, and probe whether the accused were involved in other crimes.
