US President Donald Trump on Saturday said immigration is “killing” Europe and urged the continent to “get its act together” or there won’t be any Europe left anymore. he was speaking to reporters after landing in Scotland. Trump claimed “many” European countries are facing a “horrible invasion” and need to act quickly.

“On immigration, you better get your act together. You’re not going to have Europe anymore,” he warned. “You got to stop the horrible invasion that’s happening to Europe, many countries in Europe,” he added. Trump’s comments come despite his own European heritage. His father, Fred Trump, and mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, emigrated to the US from Europe.

Trump noted “some” European leaders have resisted immigration but have not received proper credit. “I could name them right now, but I’m gonna embarrass other ones. This immigration is killing Europe,” he said. The US president highlighted his hardline immigration stance at home. “As you know, last month, we had nobody entering our country. We took out a lot of bad people that got there,” he claimed.

Security tightened

Ssecurity was ramped up as Trump began his 4-day private visit in Scotland. The US president arrived at Prestwick Airport on Friday evening and stayed at his luxury golf resort, Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire. Trump was greeted by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray and Warren Stephens, US Ambassador to the UK.

Speaking to reporters, “I like your prime minister, he’s slightly more liberal than I am – as you probably heard – but he’s a good man. He got a trade deal done. You know, they’ve been working on this deal for 12 years, he got it done – that’s a good deal, it’s a good deal for the UK.”

Trump is due to meet UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, as well as opening a second 18-hole course at his estate in Aberdeenshire in the next few days.  On Sunday, Trump is due to meet European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, whom he called a “highly respected woman”, to discuss trade, and on Monday, he will travel to Trump International Links Aberdeen with Starmer.

He said “it’s great to be in Scotland” and praised both the governments, repeating his comment about a 50-50 chance of securing a deal with the EU, adding it would be his government’s biggest trade deal thus far, if it came together. Accompanied by his second son Eric, he teed off for a round of golf at 10am at the resort.

Protests erupt

Several hundred demonstrators gathered in both Aberdeen and Edinburgh to protest against the visit. Many carried signs referring to an expletive slogan made infamous by the late comedian Janey Godley in 2018. Questions have already been raised about the scale of the visit and the security implications, with police representatives raising concerns about the costs involved and the impact on staffing. Drones and helicopters have also been circling overhead.

Trump played his round of golf with three others, including his son Eric, with an entourage that included 15 golf buggies. A round during peak summer season can cost £1,000 at Turnberry. There were no sign of any protesters around the course. Trump waved to photographers who had gathered on a beach dune for a vantage point as he walked to the fourth tee.
