Facility to have death row wing, viewing areas for victims’ families
Israel is building a gallows to execute Palestinians convicted of terrorism under a law passed by the Knesset in March. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir unveiled the site this week, saying the facility would include a death row wing, gallows and viewing areas for victims’ families.
“We are making history,” Ben-Gvir said. “Terrorists deserve only one thing: death by hanging.” The law mandates hanging for terrorism-related killings and applies only to Palestinians as it is enforced through military courts that do not try Israeli citizens.
Legal experts and human rights groups have called it a two-tier justice system. The law faces a challenge in Israel’s Supreme Court over violations of rights to life, dignity, equality and due process. Ben-Gvir said the facility fulfilled a campaign promise ahead of national elections scheduled for Oct 27. Over 9,300 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, according to Israeli rights group HaMoked.
