Bollywood actress Isha Koppikar reflects on 24 years of Khallas, the iconic song that redefined her career and pop culture

Some songs fade with time, while others become part of popular culture. Khallas from Company remains one such track that continues to resonate even after 24 years. The song, known for its edgy appeal and raw energy, still feels fresh and relevant today.

At a time when social media and digital trends did not exist, Khallas managed to achieve massive popularity purely through word of mouth, music channels, and public recall. It became a cultural phenomenon, even earning a billboard of its own, as audiences across the country embraced it.

At the centre of this phenomenon was Isha Koppikar, who became synonymous with the track. Recalling the experience, she said, “When we were shooting Khallas, it didn’t feel like we were creating something huge. It was raw and different. Once it released, it took off in a way none of us expected. I was suddenly recognised everywhere—it changed things for me overnight.”

The actress described the song as a turning point in her career. She added that it gave her a unique identity and space in the industry, highlighting the importance of individuality and self-expression.

Koppikar also credited filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for his vision. Calling him a “maverick of cinema”, she said his fearless storytelling and ability to set trends played a key role in the song’s success.

Today, Khallas continues to find new audiences, proving that its appeal transcends generations. In an era driven by calculated virality, its organic success remains a refreshing reminder of the power of instinct and authenticity.
