In a move to empower young girls and strengthen their self-confidence, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced that karate training will be introduced in 1,592 schools across the state under the Rani Lakshmibai Self-Defense Programme. The initiative aims to equip girl students with self-defence skills and the mental strength to face real-life challenges with courage and composure.
According to the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the program will cover girls studying from Class 6 to Intermediate level. The training will be conducted over a two-month period during the 2025-26 academic year, with 20 intensive sessions, each lasting 90 minutes.
Officials said the sessions will be designed not just to teach physical defense techniques but also to foster self-discipline, confidence, and awareness among adolescent girls. The curriculum will combine martial arts basics, practical defense drills, and motivational sessions led by trained instructors.
“The aim is to empower girls to defend themselves and to develop the inner strength to stand up against any form of threat or harassment. Rani Lakshmibai symbolizes bravery and determination, this initiative reflects her spirit,” said B Srinivas, State Project Director, SSA AP.
The state government’s focus on integrating self-defense into the school curriculum comes amid growing emphasis on women’s safety and empowerment in educational institutions. The program is also expected to promote physical fitness and emotional resilience among students, preparing them to face various challenges in life.
Parents have hailed the move as a progressive step toward gender equality and holistic development. They believe that teaching self-defense from a young age will not only enhance personal safety but also encourage girls to pursue their ambitions fearlessly.
With the Rani Lakshmibai Self-Defense Programme set to begin in the coming academic year, Andhra Pradesh is taking a decisive step in ensuring that every girl learns to protect herself, both in body and spirit.
