Dr. Lokeswara Rao Sajja, MD, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at STAR Hospitals, Hyderabad, presented a two-decade follow-up studies on patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with concomitant mitral valve repair at AATS Mitral Conclave 2025. The conclave was held in New York from December 11–12, 2025, and was attended by over 900 leading cardiac surgeons and researchers from across the globe. The analysis demonstrated excellent long-term durability and effectiveness of this surgical strategy, with overall survival exceeding 80% at 20 years.
Study highlights
The study, titled “Outcomes of Mitral Valve Repair in Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation: A Two-Decade Experience,” analyzed outcomes of 212 patients. The outcomes represent one of the largest and longest longitudinal real-world datasets worldwide in ischemic mitral regurgitation and provide strong evidence supporting mitral valve repair during CABG for sustained long-term survival.
Global impact
The findings carry significant implications for global cardiac surgical practice, reinforcing the role of mitral valve repair as a durable and effective approach when performed concomitantly with bypass surgery. The presentation was well received by an international audience of experts, highlighting the growing contribution of Indian cardiovascular research to evidence-based global guidelines and clinical decision-making.
The Mitral Conclave was established in 2010 with the objective of bringing together experts in the field of mitral valve disease. Today, the conclave is recognized as one of the most important international meetings for mitral valve specialists worldwide. It serves as a hub for innovation, showcasing groundbreaking research, state-of-the-art technologies and evolving treatment strategies.
