Local bodies poll notification today

In a significant development for Telangana's grassroots democracy, the State High Court on Wednesday rejected a plea for a stay on the release of notifications for upcoming local body elections during hearing on BC reservations case, paving the way for the process to commence as scheduled. The decision came during an ongoing hearing on Backward Classes (BC) reservations, underscoring the judiciary's reluctance to disrupt electoral timelines amid policy debates.

According to reports, the petitioners' counsel had urged the court to halt the notification issuance, citing concerns over the contentious BC quota enhancements under Government Order (GO) No. 9. However, the bench, led by Chief Justice A.K. Singh, dismissed the request outright, stressing that the notifications could proceed without impediment. This ruling ensures that the Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) election process moves forward unhindered.

As a direct outcome, the State Election Commission (SEC) is set to issue the official notifications on October 9, triggering the nomination filing process. SEC officials are currently in consultations with their legal team to iron out any procedural nuances arising from the court's observations. In a proactive step, the Commission has scheduled a video conference with District Collectors to coordinate implementation across the state, ensuring seamless logistics and free and fair elections.
