A controversy erupted in Andhra Pradesh after a Godavari Pushkaram ghat being developed for the 2027 festival was reportedly named after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s grandson, Nara Devansh. The issue drew criticism on social media, prompting a swift response from IT and Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh.

Terming the development highly inappropriate and ridiculous, Lokesh directed officials to immediately remove the name and ensure that no public infrastructure project is named after Devansh. He emphasized that such practices have no place in government programmes and thanked those who brought the matter to his attention.

The controversy centres around a Pushkaram ghat being developed at Munikoodali in Seethanagaram mandal of East Godavari district. As part of preparations for the 2027 Godavari Pushkarams, authorities had reportedly installed a board identifying the facility as “Devansh Ghat.” Photographs and videos of the signage went viral on social media, triggering criticism from opposition voices and netizens who questioned the use of a family member’s name for a public project.

The issue gained further attention after East Godavari District Collector Keerthi Chekuri inspected the site and directed officials to develop it as a model rural Pushkaram ghat. Following the emergence of the controversy, Lokesh intervened and instructed officials to remove the name immediately.

Officials are developing the Munikoodali ghat as a major access point for devotees travelling from North Andhra districts during the Godavari Pushkarams. The existing 49-metre ghat is being expanded to 84 metres to accommodate larger crowds. Authorities have also been directed to complete key development works before Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s proposed visit on June 24.

The upgraded facility will include drinking water arrangements, changing rooms, sanitation facilities and medical camps to ensure convenience and safety for pilgrims. The prompt response from Lokesh has effectively put an end to the naming controversy, with the government reiterating its commitment to accountability and transparency in public administration.
