Doctors at Medicover Hospitals successfully treated a four-year-old boy suffering from a congenital heart defect without performing open-heart surgery, using an advanced minimally invasive procedure.

The child, Master Viyaan Pujari, who weighed only 11 kilograms, was admitted with repeated chest infections, breathing difficulty, fatigue, and poor weight gain. After a detailed cardiac evaluation, doctors diagnosed him with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), commonly referred to as a hole in the heart. The condition occurs when there is an abnormal opening between the upper chambers of the heart.

Considering the child’s age and low body weight, the pediatric cardiac team chose a Transcatheter ASD Device Closure instead of conventional surgery. The procedure was performed through a small puncture in a blood vessel in the leg, where doctors inserted a catheter and placed a special closure device to seal the defect successfully, avoiding any chest incision or visible scar.

Dr. Amol Gupta, Consultant Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist and Fetal Cardiologist, said the child recovered quickly after the procedure and became active within a day. Doctors stated that early diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment methods are helping children recover faster while avoiding major surgeries and long hospital stays.
