Medicover Hospitals saves premature baby with life-saving surgery

Medicover Hospitals has successfully treated a rare and critical case of midgut volvulus with intestinal malrotation in a newborn, showcasing the hospital's advanced pediatric surgical expertise and neonatal care capabilities.

A baby girl, born on November 11, 2024, at 36 weeks of gestation and weighing 1.79 kgs, was admitted to the NICU on November 17, 2024, with symptoms of bilious vomiting and decreased urine output. Diagnosed with midgut volvulus and malrotation through advanced diagnostic imaging, the baby underwent Ladd’s procedure on November 20, 2024, under the care of an expert multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Madhu Mohan Reddy, Dr. Ravinder Reddy Parige, Dr. Navitha M, and Dr. Vamshee Reddy.

The surgery involved straightening the duodenum, widening the mesentery, releasing adhesions, performing an appendectomy, and repositioning the intestines. Post-surgery, the baby received intensive NICU care, including IV antibiotics and nutritional support, and progressed to full oral feeds within a week.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Ravinder Reddy Parige stated, “Midgut volvulus with malrotation is a life-threatening condition that requires timely intervention. The successful outcome of this case reflects the dedication of our medical and nursing teams, as well as the state-of-the-art facilities available at our hospital.”

The baby was discharged in stable condition on November 27, 2024, weighing 1.77 kgs and is now thriving under parental care.
