For the first time in Telangana, a Geographical Indication (GI) application is being filed for gold jewellery. The application for Narayanpet 24 Karat Gold Jewellery will be officially submitted on Monday, making it the first-ever GI bid for gold from the state.
The initiative is being led by Subhajit Saha, a registered GI practitioner, founder of Resolute4IP, and popularly known as the “GI Man of Telangana.” He confirmed that this will be the state’s 27th GI application, with three more to be filed shortly.
Narayanpet’s jewellery-making tradition spans more than a century, with artisans known for crafting ornaments from 99.9% pure 24 Karat gold. Unlike the widely used 22K and 18K varieties, 24K gold is heavier, softer, and more delicate to work with, requiring extraordinary skill. Narayanpet’s goldsmiths, working in small clusters, have mastered the art of creating intricate designs that blend heritage with contemporary appeal.
The jewellery is not only prized for its purity and craftsmanship but also valued as a form of financial security. For generations, local farming families have invested in Narayanpet gold, often selling ornaments during difficult agricultural seasons to reinvest in farming. This tradition highlights its socio-economic importance beyond cultural heritage.
“The GI tag will help Narayanpet 24K gold glitter brighter and ensure recognition and fair rewards for its artisans,” said Saha.
This milestone is expected to give Narayanpet’s timeless artistry global visibility, safeguarding its legacy while opening new opportunities for Telangana’s jewellery sector.
