Rooftop solar systems have been installed on around 23.96 lakh households, nearly 24 per cent of the one crore households targeted under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), Parliament was informed on Tuesday.
The scheme, a demand-driven initiative, allows all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections to apply for rooftop solar installation via the National Portal, Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
As of December 3, 2025, the scheme has received over 53.5 lakh applications, and 19.17 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide, covering 23.96 lakh households. The government aims to reach one crore households in the residential sector by FY 2026-27, including the current financial year.
The scheme carries a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore and does not allocate targets state-wise. Currently, 7,075.78 MW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed in the residential sector. To maintain quality, the Ministry prescribes minimum technical specifications for solar modules, inverters, and other components. Installations are inspected by local DISCOM officials, and vendors must maintain systems for five years. Additionally, a third-party assessment of at least 1 per cent of installed systems nationwide is being conducted.
Financial assistance under the scheme includes Rs 30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and Rs 18,000 per kWp for an additional kWp for individual households, capped at 3 kWp. For Group Housing Societies and Residential Welfare Associations, the assistance is Rs 18,000 per kWp with a limit of 500 kWp. Special category states and UTs, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Ladakh, North Eastern states, Andaman & Nicobar, and Lakshadweep, receive 10 per cent higher assistance.
