Nine people lost their lives and 12 others were injured when a mango-laden lorry overturned on a mini truck in Annamayya district in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday night. The accident occurred near the Reddipalli tank embankment on NH-716, while the truck was traveling from Thallapaka village to Kodur.
According to police, the labourers were seated atop crates of mangoes when the truck lost control and overturned. ‘The driver’s rash driving caused the vehicle to topple, trapping workers underneath,’ said Annamayya SP V Vidyasagar Naidu.
Among the injured, four are in critical condition and have been shifted to a hospital in Kadapa district. Others are receiving treatment locally. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS and Motor Vehicle Act. Survivors blamed driver negligence for the tragedy.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident and directed officials to provide the best medical care to the injured. ‘It is heartbreaking that poor labourers lost their lives while returning home from work. The government stands with their families,’ he said. Governor S. Abdul Nazeer also conveyed his condolences and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
