NTPC Powers TG’s Green Leap

10-08-2025 12:00:00 AM

To inject Rs 80,000 Cr into State’s Green Energy Drive

  1. The investment plan includes Rs 10,000 crore for a 2 GW pumped storage hydro project and Rs 70,000 crore for other renewable energy projects totaling 10 GW
  2. NTPC to invest Rs 80,000 crore in solar, wind, hybrid, and pumped storage hydro projects in Telangana
  3. 6,701 MW floating solar capacity planned across major reservoirs like Mallanna Sagar and Sitarama Sagar.
  4. Two-phase rollout: 10 GW renewable power plus 2 GW pumped storage hydro over the next 4–5 years.

In a major boost to Telangana’s Renewable Energy sector, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has announced plans to invest Rs 80,000 crore in green energy projects, including large-scale solar, wind, and hybrid power generation. The initiative will be implemented in close coordination with the Government of Telangana and is expected to transform the state into a leading hub for clean energy production.

NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh, along with senior officials, met Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy at the latter's residence in Jubilee Hills on Saturday to share the corporation’s investment plans. During the meeting, Gurdeep Singh stated that NTPC aims to generate up to 12 GW of green energy in Telangana, with a significant portion coming from innovative floating solar projects. The corporation is already playing a key role in the state’s power sector through its operations in Ramagundam and other locations.

As part of the proposed projects, NTPC will install floating solar panels across several major reservoirs, including Mallanna Sagar and Sitarama Sagar, with a total potential of 6,701 MW. This comes in addition to the existing 100 MW floating solar plant developed jointly by NTPC and Singareni Collieries. The investment plan includes Rs 10,000 crore for a 2 GW pumped storage hydro project and Rs 70,000 crore for other renewable energy projects totaling 10 GW.

Officials from the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation noted that discussions between the state government and NTPC began in February 2025. The corporation has also identified potential wind and solar hybrid sites in Sangareddy, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba-Gadwal districts.

The proposed partnership model with Telangana includes the state government, through its nodal agencies, taking up 26% equity in a joint venture with NTPC. The identification of land, reservoirs, and pumped hydro energy project (PHEP) sites, along with necessary facilitation, will fall under the state’s scope. The value of land, reservoirs, and evacuation infrastructure can be counted towards the government’s equity contribution. Power generated can be evacuated through dedicated or existing state network infrastructure, and the cost of power procurement will be mutually decided.

The projects will be developed in phases. In Phase I, 5,000 MW of wind, solar, hybrid, and floating solar capacity to be completed within 24–30 months from the date of land/reservoir handover and finalization of evacuation infrastructure. Likewise in Phase II, another 5,000 MW of similar renewable projects, along with a 2,000 MW pumped storage hydro project, to be developed within 36–48 months after site handover and necessary approvals.

The way forward involves creating a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) between NTPC Green Energy Ltd and the Government of Telangana to develop clean energy projects. The initiative will provide NTPC with an opportunity to showcase innovative solutions such as floating solar, flexible renewable power, and hybrid power projects through long-term Power Purchase Agreements. There is also significant potential to add 21.9 billion units of renewable power in the state at competitive tariffs, and to explore solarization of agricultural power supply.

With a target of achieving 60 GW of renewable capacity in the country by 2032, NTPC is making rapid progress toward sustainable power generation. NTPC’s vision is to become the world’s leading power company, accelerating India’s growth and energy transition, and this partnership with Telangana marks a significant step in that direction.
