What’s one thing you love doing outside of work?
I really enjoy writing, especially about marketing, management and leadership. After spending so many years in this profession, you collect a lot of experiences and learnings along the way. I like putting some of those thoughts into words and sharing them with others.
How do you usually spend your weekends?
For me, weekends are mostly about family. I love spending time with them, and quite often we just get into the car and drive somewhere new. It could be a new place, a restaurant or just somewhere we haven’t explored before. I enjoy these little experiences together, they help me switch off and recharge.
Any gadgets you’re currently obsessed with or can’t do without?
I would have to say my smartphone. I don’t think I’m obsessed with it, but I certainly can’t do without it! Today, almost everything is on the phone, communication, news, books, social media, banking, shopping, investments and even managing my daily tasks. It has practically become an organiser for my entire life.
If you could switch careers tomorrow, what would you choose?
Probably a writer or a professor. I enjoy writing, but I also really enjoy sharing experiences and interacting with younger people. So perhaps the ideal second career would be one where I could do a bit of both, write and teach.
Which part of your job gives you the most satisfaction?
Seeing my team do well. Building successful brands and delivering business growth is obviously satisfying, but I feel particularly happy when someone from my team does great work and gets appreciated by others, especially senior management. As a leader, seeing your people grow and get recognised is a different kind of satisfaction.
A show, film, or ad campaign you’d tell everyone to watch?
I’ve always admired Nike’s advertising. Their best campaigns don’t really feel like advertisements, they tell stories about ambition, perseverance, confidence and pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible. They show how a brand can inspire people and become much bigger than the product it sells. As a marketer, I find that fascinating.
