Cordelia Cruises, CEO Jurgen Bailom on how India’s festive consumer is moving from traditional celebrations to experience-led family holidays

“The holiday itself becomes part of the celebration.”

“Consumers are moving from spending on things to spending on experiences and memories.”

India’s festive consumer is increasingly spending not just on what can be bought, but on what can be experienced. As family celebrations extend beyond the home, travel is becoming part of the festive proposition. For Cordelia Cruises, this is opening a new opportunity: positioning the cruise holiday itself as a celebration.

Jurgen Bailom, President & Chief Executive Officer, Cordelia Cruises, speaks to AdMirror about the changing festive traveler, multigenerational holidays, experiential spending and why brands need to move beyond discounts to create meaningful occasion-led connections.

Celebrations move beyond home

Festivals in India have always been about bringing people together. What is changing is the setting. Families increasingly want experiences where different generations can spend meaningful time together without one person managing all the planning and logistics.

A cruise fits naturally into that behaviour. Families can travel, dine, watch shows and celebrate together, while still having the freedom to spend parts of the day differently. The holiday itself becomes part of the celebration.<

Festive breaks become holidays

Traditional celebrations and returning home will always remain important, but consumers now have more choices in how they use a festive break. A long weekend or a few days off can become an opportunity to travel.

The appeal of cruising is that the journey is part of the holiday. From the moment guests come onboard, there is dining, entertainment, activities and time with family. It allows people to disconnect from everyday routines while still celebrating together.

Families want it all

It is less about choosing one factor and more about combining several. Children may want activities, younger travelers’ social experiences, parents, good food and relaxation, while older family members may value comfort and time together.

Convenience has become particularly important. Consumers increasingly value experiences where family time, entertainment, food and relaxation come together easily. That is one reason cruising resonates with multigenerational families.

Experiences replace material

Consumers are increasingly willing to invest in holidays and shared experiences if they deliver value for the entire family. They are also researching and comparing more, looking beyond the headline price to the overall experience.

Short holidays are becoming particularly relevant. A two-, three- or four-night break can itself become a festive holiday, expanding the occasions on which consumers consider travel.

Festive travel drives demand

Festive breaks, long weekends, school holidays, family gatherings and year-end travel all contribute to demand. We see interest from families, multigenerational groups, couples and consumers celebrating milestones.

The larger opportunity is to make cruising one more way in which a family holiday or celebration can happen, rather than treating festive demand as an isolated seasonal opportunity.

Marketing moves beyond promotions

We do not disclose specific allocations within our annual marketing budget. However, festive and year-end travel is an important part of our marketing calendar.

As the cruise category has grown in India, our investment has evolved across brand building, digital discovery, content, partnerships, trade, consumer education and experience-led storytelling. Marketing is increasingly about showing consumers why cruising is relevant to different occasions.

Relevance wins beyond discounts

Almost every brand competes for attention during the festive season, and discounts alone can become easy to ignore. Brands need to communicate what consumers can experience.

For us, that means showcasing the meals, conversations, entertainment, celebrations, destinations and moments that become part of the holiday.

Ultimately, brands stand out when they become part of how people want to celebrate, rather than simply appearing with another festive offer.
