Order and Chaos

Khush Raho with Sangeeta

Wars. Economic disruption, mass layoffs, low job opportunities. Fuel shortages. Natural disasters like wildfires, extreme heat in some places, flooding in others, low rainfall elsewhere. If we focus on these things, life can seem chaotic, overwhelming, and stressful. It can even make us feel low, depressed, drained of energy.

So what can be done?

I used to watch the news first thing in the morning. This was a habit of many decades. When I was recuperating from radical surgery, that habit fell away and my life started following a different routine. As the years passed and my wellness practices evolved, I understood two things.

The first is that how we feel internally is very often a function of what we feed our immediate environment and our thoughts. If accelerated disasters are seen, heard, and watched at high pitch on news channels, or low pitch in print, either way that starts structuring how we see reality.

The second learning was that I need to find and hold my centre. When I go deep into meditation, or look back at the many ups and downs in my life, what I realise is that everything becomes manageable and bearable if I keep my centre in a calm, steady energetic mode. It is not easy. It takes practice. One has to keep returning to the core of one's being.

So simultaneously, there can be order inside us, while the world outside continues on its merry way. It may seem chaotic out there, but the important thing is to navigate and manage one's life, to keep doing what one has to do. Everything becomes more coherent when we hold steady.

This is the principle of energy and order. A Nobel scientist, Ilya Prigogine, demonstrated that complex systems far from equilibrium can spontaneously self-organise into higher order states. Coherence can be found in small pockets, and from these small pockets it can grow outward. Each person who holds their inner order steady becomes a living node from which a larger reordering can quietly, and then suddenly, spread to other nodes around them. Consciousness and the world around us are not separate. What we carry inside, we broadcast outward.

So my suggestion is this. Do not be disheartened. Do not watch the news first thing in the morning, or log into socials. Instead, listen to classical music, mantras, chants, divine sounds, earth sounds. Absorb the morning sunlight, breathe fresh air, walk under trees. What we feed our energy system in the physical body and the invisible one is even more important than the breakfast we eat, because we are giving our system a cue to start ordering itself into a more coherent, higher frequency state. Follow this with a short meditation, either before starting your work day or at the end of it. Make it a regular practice. So will the inner coherence and order grow.

Namaste.

Small rituals. Profound healing.

Until next time — Khush Raho! Stay happy, stay healthy.
