EKALAVYA MALLEPALLI | Hyderabad

Here is some good news for all the pet lovers. A pet crematorium was recently launched at Nallagandla in Serilingampally zone in Hyderabad developed at a cost of Rs 2 cr in an area spread over 500 sq yards surrounded by large banyan trees, various palms, flowering shrubs and various creepers and climbers. A seating area is also provided for the pet owners surrounded by a water body with water lilies and fish in it.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has dedicated staff available at the cremation centre that is trained to address the needs of the pet parent. All the sanitary protocols such as wearing masks, gloves and bibs are followed by the staff while in operation.

The centre also installed a modern LPG incinerator, sophisticated and well-designed machinery as per the norms of Pollution Control Board. The deceased pets are converted to sterile ash through incineration and the produced emissions are treated thoroughly by a wet scrubber wash to make them pollution free and then let out through a stack which is 30 meter height from the ground level.

At present, the centre provides individual pet cremation which can take up to 30-90 minutes for incineration and the capacity of the furnace chamber at a single use is 200 kg weight.

The centre also provides services such as specialized containers for transport and cremation of the pets, the staff will also help the pet parents to transport their deceased pet to the crematorium on the same day, well maintained and thoroughly cleaned minivans with a freezer facility is also provided to ensure safety.

The centre also provides a space where the last rites of the pet can be done.  Cremation equipment with zero-emission cremation and a personalized grief support system is also set up. The centre also installed a pet mortuary to keep the pets if bought after sunset and the cremated remains (ashes) to the pet parents in a swift manner.

Chief Veterinary Officer of GHMC Abdul Wakil said, “There is an acute need of pet crematorium in Hyderabad and the establishment that was recently opened at Nallagandla is the best of its kind in the country which would soon set a precedent for other states to follow.” He urged the pet parents to use the facility.

Speaking to Metro India, M Nutan, a resident of Hyderabad said, “This is a considerate step on part of the GHMC authorities and a huge step towards compassionate treatment towards animals. Pets have an innate capability to preserve the mental well being of their caretakers. Easing the pain of their loss by making the final goodbye as hassle free as possible is a welcome initiative.”

Earlier, GHMC has established a pet crematorium with LPG Gaseous incinerator at Fathullaguda in L.B.Nagar zone in collaboration with an NGO called ‘People for Animals’ in 2022.
