The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), North Zone, recently convened a meeting with around 25 transgender individuals residing and working within the North Zone limits. The discussion focused on addressing community concerns, promoting lawful livelihood options, and strengthening dialogue between the police and transgender community members.

During the meeting, participants highlighted several challenges, including social exclusion, limited acceptance, and restricted employment opportunities. Issues of public concern were also raised, particularly complaints about alleged extortion during social functions such as marriages, house-warming ceremonies, and other events, which reportedly caused inconvenience and unease among residents. The DCP encouraged the community to participate in skill development programs, acquire new trades, pursue self-employment, and adopt dignified means of livelihood. It was assured that genuine grievances would be taken up with relevant government departments to facilitate welfare schemes, rehabilitation initiatives, and necessary support.

Participants also expressed difficulties in identifying local residents and outsiders due to the lack of proper identity cards. Some reported delays in receiving transgender certificates, which hindered access to government welfare programs. These issues were clarified, and the police advised the community against intimidation or extortion, emphasizing that such practices could attract legal action and erode public goodwill.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from the police to maintain constructive dialogue, promote lawful and sustainable livelihoods, safeguard public order, and ensure the dignity and rights of the transgender community.
