The MP explained that merging nearly 74 surrounding villages with Vijayawada city would create a unified urban governance framework capable of supporting large-scale infrastructure planning

The long-pending proposal for the formation of the Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has once again come into focus, with Vijayawada MP Kesineni Shivanath (Chinni) urging Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to take immediate steps to operationalise the expanded civic body.

During a meeting with the Chief Minister, Kesineni Chinni emphasised that expanding the existing Vijayawada Municipal Corporation into a Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is critical for ensuring structured, sustainable, and future-ready urban development. He submitted detailed proposals outlining the administrative, economic, and infrastructure advantages of the expansion.

The MP explained that merging nearly 74 surrounding villages with Vijayawada city would create a unified urban governance framework capable of supporting large-scale infrastructure planning. A Greater Vijayawada Corporation, he said, would accelerate the development of industrial corridors, IT parks, logistics hubs, and tourism projects, significantly enhancing employment generation and private investment.

Kesineni Chinni also highlighted that the current administrative split between NTR district and Krishna district has resulted in coordination challenges in areas such as policing, traffic regulation, law and order, and airport administration. Establishing a single, expanded municipal corporation would help overcome these hurdles by providing a coherent governance and planning structure.

Integrated management of drinking water supply, sewerage, stormwater drainage, and flood control, especially crucial for a rapidly expanding urban region like Vijayawada, would become more effective under the proposed Greater Vijayawada framework, the MP said.

The Chief Minister responded positively to the proposal and acknowledged the strategic importance of Vijayawada as a key growth engine for Andhra Pradesh. He expressed optimism that the state government would take a favourable decision on the formation of the Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in the near future.
