Taking a giant step towards environmental protection and sustainable mobility, the coalition government in Andhra Pradesh has rolled out a large-scale initiative to promote eco-friendly transportation. As part of this green drive, the government distributed electric bicycles at highly subsidised rates, with Chittoor district’s Kuppam constituency setting a new benchmark by distributing 5,555 e-cycles within 24 hours, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The programme was undertaken with the objective of transforming Kuppam into an environmentally sustainable constituency. Officials said the initiative aims to reduce fuel dependence, cut carbon emissions and encourage affordable last-mile connectivity among the public.
Under the scheme, the state government entered into an agreement with E-Motorad to supply electric bicycles at subsidised prices. Each e-cycle, originally priced at Rs. 35,000, is being provided with a government subsidy of Rs. 10,000, enabling beneficiaries to purchase the vehicle for Rs. 25,000. According to officials, a single charge allows the e-cycle to travel up to 40 kilometres, making it suitable for daily commuting.
An added feature of the project is local employment generation. The e-cycles are being assembled at Kuppam itself by the E-Motorad company, supporting local industry and skill development.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu personally launched the distribution during the NTR Bharosa pension distribution programme held in his home constituency. In a symbolic gesture promoting green mobility, the Chief Minister rode an e-cycle for nearly three kilometres from Thoonasi to the public meeting venue, leading a rally that drew widespread public attention. Following the achievement, the Chief Minister formally presented the Guinness World Record certification to the Chittoor District Collector, acknowledging the administrative effort behind the historic feat.
Addressing the gathering, Chandrababu Naidu said Kuppam had laid the foundation for a new chapter in sustainable development. He remarked that the people had voted for the bicycle symbol during elections and the government had now demonstrated what development truly means. He further stated that the e-cycles can be charged conveniently at home without additional expenditure and assured that more incentives and benefits would be introduced in the coming days to expand the green transport initiative across the state.
The record-setting event has positioned Kuppam as a model constituency for clean energy adoption, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to environmental conservation and innovative public welfare programmes.
