Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has ordered immediate action following a complaint by a woman who alleged that medical negligence at King George Hospital (KGH) led to the death of her unborn child.

The woman, identified as Patnala Umadevi, approached the Deputy Chief Minister with an emotional appeal, stating that the negligence and inhumane treatment by doctors and staff at the government hospital resulted in irreversible physical and mental trauma. Moved by her distress, Pawan Kalyan directed officials to bring the victim and her family to his office at the Secretariat on Monday for a detailed review of the case.

According to the complaint, Umadevi met the Deputy Chief Minister on Friday night at Visakhapatnam Airport while he was returning after concluding his district tour. She informed him that she was admitted to KGH in the first week of December last year for delivery. From the time of admission doctors and nursing staff behaved negligently and treated her in a highly insensitive manner.

Despite the medically advised delivery date having passed, hospital staff allegedly ignored her condition. “Though my health was deteriorating, they continued to insist on normal delivery and subjected me to unbearable pain,” Umadevi stated. She claimed that repeated requests from her family members for timely medical intervention were brushed aside and that staff used harsh and abusive language.

In a disturbing allegation, she said a staff member sat on her chest during labour, showing no compassion even as she screamed in pain. She alleged that the failure to perform a caesarean section at the appropriate time ultimately resulted in the stillbirth of her baby.

After patiently listening to her account, Pawan Kalyan assured the victim that the government would stand by her. He is understood to have promised a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and said he would personally discuss the matter with senior officials of the Health Department to ensure accountability and justice.
