Senior IPS officer Sanjay, facing corruption charges in the procurement of fire safety equipment, surrendered before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Court in Vijayawada following directions from the Supreme Court.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days, until September 8. ACB officials subsequently shifted him to Vijayawada Central Prison.

The case traces back to Sanjay’s tenure as Chief of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) during the previous YSRCP government. He is accused of colluding with private firms and misappropriating funds worth Rs.1.19 crore in the name of purchasing fire safety equipment for awareness programmes meant for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Initially, Sanjay sought relief from the AP High Court, which granted him anticipatory bail on January 30 this year. However, the SC struck down the order after it was challenged, ruling that he must first surrender before the trial court. The apex court directed that he could only apply for regular bail after complying with the surrender condition. Acting in accordance with these directions, Sanjay appeared before the ACB Court today, which ordered his judicial remand.
