The Telangana government has approved a Rs 600 crore modernization plan for the Manjeera Drinking Water Project, aiming to ensure uninterrupted water supply to Hyderabad for decades to come. This initiative aligns with CM Revanth Reddy’s Vision 2047 to strengthen core urban infrastructure.

As part of this plan, the Water Board has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to upgrade existing pipelines of Manjeera Phases 1 and 2 and introduce a new transmission line along with advanced water treatment plants. The DPR also assesses current reservoir capacity and projects future needs based on population growth. To enhance connectivity, trunk and ring mains will be developed alongside radial roads and around the Outer Ring Road, enabling flexible water distribution across urban zones.

In the short term, Rs 3.52 crore has been sanctioned for urgent repairs to the 65-year-old Manjeera Barrage. Water Board MD Ashok Reddy confirmed that there is no structural threat to the barrage, dispelling media reports of cracks. He instructed officials to address damage to the apron section and a leak at Gate 2.

Gate replacements have been deferred to avoid disrupting Hyderabad’s water supply, which could be affected for 45 days during repairs. In addition, officials were directed to improve fencing, lighting, and clear vegetation from the barrage.

The DPR also calls for long-term sewage and water recycling infrastructure, including new STPs. Consultants will be appointed to design systems that accommodate high-rise zones and urban growth corridors.
