The crime rate in Telangana has risen by 9.8 per cent. According to the Telangana annual crime report released on Sunday, a total of 2,34,158 cases were reported across the Telangana state this year in 2024 in comparison to 2,13,121 crime cases in 2023.
Telangana State Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Jitender said, “We are working towards making Telangana state a zero-drug state. He clarified that law and order in the state is under control this year except the two three minor incidents. DGP said 85 Maoists have been arrested this year.
He revealed that 1942 drug cases have been registered, 4,682 persons arrested and seized drugs worth Rs 142.95 crore in the state. He also revealed that the accused had been convicted in 48 drug cases.
Spike in cyber crime
Cybercrime has increased drastically in Telangana state this year compared to last year. Total 25,184 cybercrime cases have been registered this year, which is an increase of 43.33 percent compared to last year’s 17,571. DGP said that Rs 180 crore was traced and refunded to victims in 2024 compared to Rs 8 crore in 2023, it’s a great achievement by Telangana Cyber Security Bureau. Rs 247 crore was put on hold or freeze in 2024 as compared to 128 crore in 2023.
While explaining that the implementation of the new laws began in 2024, DGP Jitender said 85,190 cases were registered under these new laws. With the implementation of the “Zero FIR” system, 1,313 cases were registered through the judicial system.
Through CEIR Portal, Telangana state police stood among the top states in the country in recovery of the number of lost, stolen mobile phones. Total traceability generated 75,425 phones and recovered 38,231 mobile phones till November 2024, said DGP. DGP said total 20,702 road accident cases were reported in 2024 when compared to 2023 year is 23,491 and here cases have been decreased by 2,789.
Reduction in road accidents
Deaths in road accidents reduced in the state this year compared to last year by 1.49 percent. In 2023, 6,640 deaths were reported, this year number reduced to 6,541. Rape cases have increased by 28.94 percent this year, compared to the last year. Previous year 2284 rape cases were reported, this year till November 30, 2945 rape cases reported, said DGP.
Half the police stations in Telangana lack CCTV cameras
Hyderabad: Out of the 774 police stations in Telangana, only 376 police stations are equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. The Supreme Court mandates that all police stations install CCTV cameras for transparency and to understand the interactions between law enforcement officials and citizens.
Rajendra Palnati of Youth for Anti-Corruption said, “A representation to install CCTV cameras has been made with the police department post the RTI reply.” The finding that raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability.
In order to ascertain the number of police stations in Telangana and the extent of CCTV coverage, Youth for Anti-Corruption submitted a request under the Right to Information Act to the Public Information Officer at the Directorate General of Police (DGP) office in Telangana.
The findings were subsequently revealed by Rajendra Palnati, the founder of Youth for Anti-Corruption.
It is noteworthy that, despite the equipment being supplied, the installation process is still pending in a significant number of stations, raising concerns about implementation timelines and oversight, says Rajendra.

DGP reacted on increasing police suicide cases
Answering to the query posed by media persons regarding the increasing police suicide cases are due to work pressure in the state, DGP Jitender said “there may be several issues like financial issues, family issues, emotional issues, and personal issues. I cannot say this is happening because of one issue. We can’t generalize that it is because of work pressure.”
He said that in some cases, suicides have also occurred due to work pressure also. He said that family counseling is being conducted for those who are prone to suicide and attempts are being made to resolve problems through counseling.
Answering to the query about Investigations of the Sandhya Theatre stampede, DGP said “Let us not talk about this. A lot of things have gone. The case is already under investigation. The court is also looking into various aspects of the case. It’s sub judice also,” he said.
