This year’s heavy rains and steady river inflows have given a major boost to Telangana’s power sector, helping the state achieve its highest-ever hydel power generation. Telangana Genco, which began full-scale production with the Krishna river floods in June, has been generating uninterrupted power for nearly six months. With over 6100 million units produced so far, it is now moving toward the 7000-million-unit mark.
Telangana relies mainly on hydel plants on the Krishna river, including Srisailam (900 MW), Nagarjuna Sagar (815.6 MW), Jurala (234 MW), Lower Jurala (240 MW), Pulichintala (120 MW) and the 60-MW unit on the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal. On the Godavari river, Pochampad, Nizamsagar and Singur together add 72 MW, bringing total hydel capacity to 2441.8 MW.
The previous record was 6058 million units in 2022. This year’s exceptional rainfall has already pushed output past that figure by mid-November. Generation began early, with 56.53 million units in April, rising steadily and touching 1435.98 million units in October. November’s average of 45 million units per day helped surpass the earlier peak. The surge has also eased financial pressure. With reduced need for costly market purchases, the state has saved an estimated Rs 4000 crore, according to Genco officials.
