Telangana has made significant progress in expanding digital infrastructure, with 85 per cent of its Gram Panchayats now connected under the Centre's flagship BharatNet programme, according to information furnished by the Union Ministry of Communications in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The Ministry stated that 10,833 of Telangana's 12,760 Gram Panchayats have been connected through BharatNet as of June 30, 2026, taking broadband connectivity to the vast majority of rural local bodies in the State. Around 15 per cent of Gram Panchayats are yet to be brought under the programme.

The Centre also highlighted Telangana's impressive progress in mobile connectivity. Of the State's villages, 10,022 now have mobile network coverage, while 9,929 villages are already covered by 4G and 5G services, reflecting near universal access to high speed mobile connectivity.

Replying to a starred question raised in the Lok Sabha by MP Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said the BharatNet project is being implemented across the country in phases to provide broadband connectivity to every Gram Panchayat. The Government has also approved the Amended BharatNet Programme, which aims to upgrade existing networks created under earlier phases, extend connectivity to newly created Gram Panchayats, 

ensure long term operation and maintenance, and facilitate 1.5 crore fibre based internet connections across the country. The Ministry further informed Parliament that the Centre has undertaken multiple initiatives through the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) to strengthen telecom infrastructure in Telangana's tribal, remote, aspirational and rural areas. These include the Left Wing Extremism Phase I Upgradation Project, LWE Phase II Project, the 4G Saturation Project, and the BharatNet programme. As of June 30, 412 mobile towers have been commissioned under DBN funded projects, extending mobile connectivity to 493 villages across Telangana. The Centre has also conveyed in principle approval to the Telangana Government for implementation of the Amended BharatNet Programme in the State.

Besides telecom infrastructure, the Department of Posts has modernised postal services across Telangana by rolling out Advanced Postal Technology in all post offices, equipping 5,427 Branch Post Offices with mobile devices and enabling digital banking, Direct Benefit Transfer services, internet and mobile banking, UPI enabled services, and faster Speed Post delivery in Hyderabad.

Extensive Mobile and 4G/5G reach across villages

The Union Ministry of Communications has released district wise data showing that Telangana has achieved extensive mobile connectivity, with 10,022 villages covered by mobile networks and 9,929 villages receiving 4G or 5G services across all 33 districts.

According to the figures placed before the Lok Sabha, Sangareddy tops the State with 568 villages having mobile connectivity, followed by Nalgonda (540), Adilabad (488), Vikarabad (480) and Kamareddy (457). Nearly all these villages are also covered by 4G and 5G services, with Sangareddy recording 564, Nalgonda 539, Adilabad 479, Vikarabad 479, and Kamareddy 456 villages under next generation mobile services.

Other districts with extensive coverage include Rangareddy (441 mobile, 440 with 4G/5G), Nizamabad (424, 420), Nirmal (405, 398), Kumuram Bheem (400, 392) and Siddipet (368, 368), indicating almost complete migration to high speed mobile networks. Urban districts have also achieved complete coverage. The districts list with fully covered 4G and 5G services includes Warangal Urban (83 of 83 villages), Karimnagar (195 of 195), Jagitial (284 of 284), Mahabubnagar (298 of 298), Peddapalli (200 of 200), Rajanna Sircilla (162 of 162), Siddipet (368 of 368) and Suryapet (261 of 261) have attained 100 percent 4G and 5G coverage.

The district wise statistics highlight Telangana's rapid expansion of digital infrastructure, leaving only a small gap between overall mobile coverage and high speed 4G and 5G connectivity across rural areas.
