The Telangana government has initiated the process of drafting a new Seed Act, with farmers' opinions playing a crucial role in shaping the legislation. A committee formed to develop the Act held its first meeting at BRK Bhavan on Monday, chaired by Agriculture Director B Gopi.
Officials discussed key provisions to be included in the new Seed Act, such as seed rights for farmers, measures to curb counterfeit seeds, and compensation mechanisms for farmers affected by fake seeds. The committee also reviewed shortcomings in existing laws and explored ways to strengthen regulations.
To ensure farmer participation, the committee plans to conduct meetings from village to state level, gathering feedback from farmers, agricultural experts, and officials. Additionally, discussions will be held with seed companies, organizers, and dealers to refine the draft.
Seed Corporation Chairman Anvesh Reddy emphasized that the Seed Act is being designed for farmers' welfare, ensuring quality seeds and fair practices. Committee members also suggested studying seed laws in other states to incorporate best practices.
The government aims to introduce a strong and effective Seed Act, prioritizing farmers' interests and addressing challenges in the agricultural sector. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Farmers' Commission members, agricultural officers, and university representatives.
