Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, on Saturday, approved the appointment of Minister Mohammad Azharuddin and Telangana Jana Samithi President M Kodandaram as Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) under the Governor quota, bringing an end to months of uncertainty.
The nominations were originally recommended by the state cabinet on August 30, but had remained pending for several months. The issue gained urgency as Azharuddin, who was inducted into the cabinet without being a member of either house of the legislature, faced a constitutional deadline to secure membership within six months. With the deadline set to expire on April 30, the delay had raised concerns within the government.
In a key development, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy personally met the Governor at Lok Bhavan few days ago and requested early clearance of the pending file. Following this meeting, the Governor approved the nominations, providing significant relief to the state government.
The decision ensures that Azharuddin can continue in his ministerial role without constitutional hurdles. It also clears the way for Prof Kodandaram, a prominent political figure and academic, to enter the Legislative Council.
Reacting to the development, Kodandaram stated that he had not been actively pursuing the position, noting that political roles are temporary. However, he acknowledged that the approval now enables both leaders to formally assume their responsibilities.
