The Transmission Corporation of Telangana Limited (TGTRANSCO) announced that Telangana has successfully met its highest-ever peak power demand of 15,752 MW on February 6, 2025, surpassing the previous record of 15,623 MW set on March 8, 2024.
This milestone highlights the state’s rapid growth in power demand, with December 2024 and January 2025 witnessing year-on-year peak demand increases of 13.49% and 10.10%, respectively. Anticipating continued growth, Telangana’s power utilities are preparing to meet 17,000 MW during the upcoming summer season.
To manage this rising demand efficiently, the state's distribution companies (SPDCL and NPDCL) have adopted a power purchase optimization strategy, securing electricity through long-term contracts and strategic procurements from power exchanges. By purchasing power when exchange rates were lower than thermal generation costs, the utilities achieved Rs 982.66 crore in savings between December 2023 and January 2025—preventing additional financial burden on consumers.
For instance, in December 2024 and January 2025, power was procured from exchanges at Rs 2.69 and Rs 2.82 per unit, significantly lower than thermal power costs of Rs 3.97 and Rs 4.18 per unit. This resulted in monthly savings of Rs 196.68 crore and Rs 185.27 crore, respectively.
Telangana’s proactive energy management has earned national recognition, with the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) being awarded the "Best in the Country" title for large states by the Government of India at IIT Indore on December 14, 2024.
