After successful shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in London, Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation’s powerful play ‘1857: Turrebaz Khan’ returns to Hyderabad this Saturday (August 23) at 7pm at Taramati Baradari Indoor Auditorium.
The gripping historical drama is based on Turrebaz Khan, a 19th-century Hyderabadi soldier who rose against British rule during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. Set in a forest just before his execution, the play imagines Khan's intense final hour in captivity with Qurban Ali—a loyalist to the regime Khan defied. The emotional face-off highlights timeless themes of rebellion, oppression, and divided loyalties.
Directed and written by Padma Shri Mohammad Ali Baig, who also plays the titular role, the production features veteran actor Masood Akhtar as Qurban Ali. The play, produced by Begum Razia Baig, features live traditional Indian percussion on stage, adding to its immersive experience.
Hailed as “a milestone in contemporary Indian theatre” and “Highlight of the Festival” by global critics, this staging continues the Foundation’s tradition of spotlighting Hyderabad’s rich history through compelling theatre.
The play is being presented by Telangana Tourism and HMDA in association with Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation.
