Eye muscle twitching, medically termed ocular myokymia or eyelid myokymia, is a common experience involving involuntary, repetitive contractions of the muscles around your eyelids. While usually harmless and temporary, it can be annoying and occasionally indicate deeper issues.
Causes
Most cases arise due to everyday triggers including: Stress or anxiety, lack of sleep, excessive caffeine or alcohol, eye strain, dry eyes or irritation, medication side effects, rare neurological conditions. According to Ayurveda, eye twitching is associated with Vata dosha imbalance and aggravated by mental stress or exhaustion anas karana.
Symptoms
Mild repetitive spasms on the upper or lower eyelid, typically lasting seconds to minutes.
Twitching may come and go over several days.
Light sensitivity or blurry vision may occasionally occur.
Usually affects one eye but can impact both in rare disorders.
Ayurvedic therapies
Ayurvedic therapies focus on correcting Vata imbalance and mental stress.
Abhyanga oil massage: Gently massage the temples and around the eyes with warm sesame or almond oil to calm nerves.
Ashwagandha and Brahmi: Consuming these herbs (after consulting a practitioner) can soothe anxiety.
Acupressure:
Cheng Qi point: Located directly under the center of the eye, massage gently in circular motions for 10–15 seconds, repeat 6–10 times.
Zan Zhu point: Found at the inner edge of the eyebrow near the nose, also helpful for tension and redness
Yang Bai poin: Just above the left eye on the forehead, useful for twitching and headaches. Apply firm but gentle pressure—never painful—with deep breathing.
