WPI inflation hits 13-mth low of 0.85%

Food articles saw a deflation of 0.86% in April from an inflation of 1.57% in March, with vegetables seeing a sharp drop. Deflation in vegetables was 18.26% in April compared to a deflation of 15.88% in March.  Onion (inflation) eased to 0.20% in April as against 26.65% in March

The annual rate of wholesale inflation based on all India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) eased to 0.85% in April 2025 on falling crude oil and vegetable prices, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday.

The benchmark WPI for all commodities fell from 154.9 in February to 154.5 in March, and to 154.2 in April 2025. The wholesale inflation rate declined from 2.45% in February to 2.05% in March, and to 0.85% in April 2025.

Positive rate of inflation in April 2025, MoCI said, was primarily due to increase in prices of manufacture of food products, other manufacturing, chemicals and chemical products, manufacture of other transport equipment and manufacture of machinery and equipment etc.

The index for primary articles decreased by 0.11% to 184.4 in April from 184.6 for the month of March, 2025. Price of crude petroleum and natural gas (-5.31%) and non-food articles (-1.78%) decreased in April 2025 as compared to March 2025. The price of minerals (7.81%) and food articles (0.36%) increased in April as compared to March. Fuel and power group index decreased by 2.82% to 148.1 from 152.4. Price of mineral oils (-3.95%) and electricity (-1.38%) decreased in April. The price of coal (0.22%) increased in April as compared to March, 2025.

The index for manufactured products increased by 0.35% to 144.9 in April 2025 from 144.4 in March.

Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 16 groups witnessed an increase in prices, 5 groups witnessed a decrease in prices and 1 group witnessed no change in prices.
