Leg pain while walking should not always be dismissed as a sign of ageing or joint problems as it could be an early warning sign of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a serious condition caused by narrowing or blockage of the arteries; Dr. P. C. Gupta, Clinical Director and HOD, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery & Vascular IR, CARE Hospitals said on the occasion of National Vascular Day.

He stressed that delayed diagnosis remains one of the leading causes of preventable disability and limb-threatening complications. According to Dr. Gupta, vascular diseases are becoming increasingly common in India due to the rising prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and tobacco use. He noted that many patients ignore early symptoms until blood circulation is severely affected.

Dr. Gupta advised people with diabetes, smokers, adults above 50 years, and those with high blood pressure or cholesterol to seek immediate medical evaluation if they experience leg pain while walking, persistent swelling, numbness, cold feet or non-healing wounds. As part of National Vascular Day, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, will organize a free vascular health check-up on Thursday to encourage early screening and improve public awareness.
