In the sensational murder case of Dalit driver Subrahmanyam, police on Friday arrested YSRCP MLC Anantha Uday Bhaskar, also known as Anantha Babu. The arrest took place shortly after he appeared before a Rajahmundry court for a hearing on a petition seeking cancellation of his bail.
According to police sources, Anantha Babu was taken into custody immediately after stepping out of the court premises. He is expected to be shifted to the Sarpavaram Police Station in Kakinada for further legal procedures and questioning.
The case, which has drawn widespread attention over the past four years, pertains to the alleged murder of his driver, Subrahmanyam. Investigators have named Anantha Babu as the prime accused (A-1), while his wife Lakshmi Durga has been listed as A-2 in the case.
Recent developments in the trial prompted the filing of a petition in a special court in Rajahmundry seeking cancellation of the bail previously granted to the MLC. In response, Anantha Babu, accompanied by his wife, appeared before the court for the hearing. Following the proceedings, law enforcement officials moved swiftly to detain him.
Given the sensitivity of the case and the high-profile nature of the accused, police deployed heavy security around the court premises to prevent any untoward incidents. Tight arrangements were made to ensure law and order during the arrest.
Officials believe that the arrest could accelerate the pace of the investigation and subsequent trial proceedings. The case has remained under close scrutiny due to its social and political implications, particularly given the victim’s Dalit background and the involvement of a sitting legislator.
