More than 31 lakh households across the country have benefited so far under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Centre informed Parliament on Wednesday.

Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, said a total of 31,12,850 households have benefited from the installation of rooftop solar (RTS) systems under the scheme as of March 6, 2026.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was launched in February 2024 with the objective of promoting solar power generation at the household level and reducing electricity costs for families. The government has set a target to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households across the country by March 2027.

Naik said the scheme operates on a demand-driven model, allowing all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection from their local distribution company (discom) to apply for rooftop solar installations. Consumers can register and apply for the scheme through a dedicated national portal, which facilitates application, approval, and subsidy benefits for eligible households.

The minister also informed the Rajya Sabha earlier that the response to the programme has been encouraging. As of March 5, 2026, a total of 63,26,125 applications had been received through the national portal. Out of these, 25,02,217 rooftop solar systems have already been installed across the country, reflecting the growing adoption of renewable energy solutions among households.
